When I was in the commissary I spotted these pre-packaged cookies, and they caught my eye.
They were.. the maple bacon cookies by betty crocker with maple icing. Now usually I love betty crocker things. These were a mess for a few reasons.
As you can see on the front on the package, these are rolled out into leaves, implying, you can roll them out and use cookie cutters. Maybe if I would have chilled the dough it would have been easier to work with, but when I attempted to do this, the "bacon pieces" made it super difficult to work with.
Now, I took all these pictures before I tried the cookies.
Let me say before posting these photos, stay the hell away from these! Far Far away!
We will get into the details in a moment!
While mixing the dough, it smelled a little funny, but I thought, maybe it will be better once baked, so I baked them off, let them cool, and then I iced them, I wanted to try them in their entirety, together, as they were intended. Mind you... I did try the icing by itself, and the maple icing was delicious, super sweet with a slight caramel taste. (I love icing too much). Also I wanted to compare that maple icing taste to my homemade maple icing I made with the pumpkin spice cupcakes I made a little bit back.
I iced them, and then added the candied bacon crumple the icing came with. I didn't try the crumble and icing together just the icing.
When I went to try it all together at first it tasted alright, mind you I had a spoon full of icing before, and I think my palette was blocked.
I went to try another one... after they were sitting in the container with the lid closed about two hours later. Absolutely disgusting, it smelled like dog treats, you know the "beggin" strips, tried a bite thinking.... it was good earlier, absolutely not. Honestly I threw up after that bite and threw all the cookies away. Worst thing I have ever made in my life, and it was a batch of pre-mix cookies!
Honestly, I am not sure how these are legal to sell.... Now I have mixed maple and bacon together in icecream before, homemade icecream we did in culinary school, and it was simply amazing. I am sure a homemade batch of maple bacon cookies would be great. My problem here is with the artificial/fake/doggy tasting/smelling "bacon". I am serious, stay the heck away from these! What a waste of an egg and a stick of butter. Honestly the icing was great, i wish i tried one before icing all of them, so i could have said fuck this, and saved the icing to put over regular sugar cookies, or even over chocolate chip cookies.
and here is a picture of the cookie... proof that i tried it, at least. . .
